How to Collect Urine

Dog

• First morning urine is preferable
• Use a clean ladle or Tupperware contiiner to catch urine mid-stream as dog squats or lifts leg
• Place urine in a container with a secure lid (PLEASE ASK US FOR A CONTAiNER IF YOU NEED ONE) and bring in to hospital immediately; if that is not possible refrigerate and bring in as soon as possible
• Time frame: should be no more than 2-3 hours old to be of the most benefit

Cat

• Clean out litter box of all litter and wash and dry thoroughly
• Use only a non-absorbent litter such as litter sand (can be obtained from vet’s office) or nothing at all; this should be the only litter box available for the cat to use
• If multiple cat home, isolate cat in a bathroom or bedroom overnight
• Use a syringe to suck up urine and place in a container with a secure lid (PLEASE ASK US FOR A CONTAINER AND SYRINGE IF YOU NEED ONE) and bring in to hospital immediately; if that is not possible refrigerate and bring in as soon as possible
• Time frame: urine should be no more than 6-8 hours old to be of the most benefit
